Africa Momentum seeks to drive growth and investment in Africa through delivering better data on African consumers.
Rapid population growth and urbanization are creating new classes of consumers across the African continent. But there is very little reliable data about how these new consumers see their countries’ economic situation and their own finances. Only a handful of African countries track consumer sentiment, which is considered by the OECD to be a leading indicator of economic prospects. The lack of freely available information on the behavior of one of the fastest growing consumer markets in the world is holding back investment and driving up the cost of doing business.
About the platform
It will provide up to date freely available data on consumer sentiment using standardised methodology across the continent.
Users will have the ability to compare consumer behavior across regions, cities, economic sectors, and market segments.
Clients include investors, domestic and international companies, central banks, and development agencies.
A stream of actionable data useful for all classes of investors - equity, fixed income, FDI, and the DFIs - inside and outside the continent.
The index aims to become a leading economic indicator, enhancing governments’ statistical capacity.
Data will be collected using Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI), which is considered the most reliable survey methodology in low and middle income countries. It will consist of semi-structured face-to-face interviews conducted with members of the public considered as reliably middle class. Quantitative data will be complemented by focus groups that probe people’s responses and motivations.
